Chapter Seventeen

In this chapter Kozol introduced Esperanza. Before he introduces her he talks about how the childrens personalities change each time they reappear. So by the time he is done making assumptions about the children, they do something to make him reconsider starting back over. You can tell a lot about Esperanza's character and personality just by her body language as Kozol explains in this chapter. Sometimes it seems as if Esperanza just needs or wants a lot of attention during school hours. One moment she will be crying, the next she seems fine.

  1. She is the type of child who almost seems to have barriers but after awhile she opens up to Kozol

  2. Yeah I agree. I don’t think she gets very much attention at home so that’s why she acts like she does at school.

  3. I think that Esperanza and her mother might be abused at home. That might explain why she acts the way she does.

  4. I think the way she acts is a reflection on how she's treated at home.
