Chapter 17

In this chapter called Ezperanza Kozol is attending Pineapple in her P.S. 65 class. The teacher is giving a lesson on rice producation but Kozols is distacted by a girl sitting in solitary. She comes over and talks to Kozol about her father and how her father is down in florida while her and her mother are up there in New York. Then she goes back to her desk, and throughout the class she keeps coming back to Kozol to tell him stuff about her father. Kozol talks with Pineapple about her and how she cries alot. Then Kozol realizes he remembers more of the distractions the children cause rather than what they were being distracted from. Also how they take pleasure in the small things of life. It stood out tto me becasue Kozol realizes that the little things that seem insignficant are actually really important to the children adn can give and insight about them.

  2. This stood out to me to. I thought it was weird how she never talked to him or told him anything else after that day.

  3. Very strange that she felt comfortable enough to tell Kozol those personal things.

  4. I never really thought about how the little things in life were important to children until I read this chapter. I think she kept going to Jonathan because she wanted to tell him but she kept leaving because she would change her mind but the urge for her to tell him kept her coming back.

  5. I think that it is weird that she is so willing to talk about really personal things during class.
